Auto Insurance Considerations Auto Insurance Considerations

Although there are many tips that can aim to guide you to lower insurance premiums, very little is mentioned in what NOT to do, so that you don’t inadvertently increase your auto insurance premiums.

Past Convictions?

Driving convictions come in many forms; whether you are found guilty of simply driving through a red light or speeding, or of causing a multiple vehicle pile-up on a motorway, you will end up paying for it through your insurance premiums. If you have convictions such as these against your name, you will find it harder to find suitable insurance, you will have to pay higher premiums to compensate for the increased risk with which you are viewed by the insurance provider, and you may have to pay higher excess before you can be issued with insurance.

Insurers always take a serious view to driving convictions; in particular those related to drink-driving. Because this act is viewed as the most irresponsible action a driver can take, any policy, regardless of the price of it, may be hard to come by for a convicted drink-driver. If they are lucky enough to find a provider that will serve them, they may not qualify for full cover, and be restricted to the legal minimum level of cover for a number of years.

Location

The location of your home can also greatly affect the amount of money you pay. A driver who lives in a rural area or in a suburb, and has their vehicle safely locked in a garage when not in use will generally pay a lower premium than someone who lives in the inner city, where their vehicle is most likely parked on a street at night and any other time where it is not being used.

Occupation

Your occupation is taken into account by providers; if you are in a hazardous autoeer, you will generally pay higher premiums. The occupations that are viewed as hazardous can change between companies, but they can still be quite strict. For instance, journalism is viewed as a high risk autoeer due to the amount of travelling involved. Your health will also play a part in determining your premium; particularly if you have a history of health problems.
